Residential Millwork in Washington, DC
Sixth Avenue Custom builds custom kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and built-ins for Washington, DC homes. Everything is made to measure in our shop about an hour up I-270 in Frederick, Maryland. We can measure your kitchen in the morning and be back at the bench by lunch.
Most of the District’s houses were built long before laser levels. A Capitol Hill rowhouse might be 16 or 18 feet wall to wall, with plaster that has wandered out of plumb over a century. Wardman porch-fronts in Petworth and Columbia Heights have their own quirks, and a 1920s colonial in Chevy Chase or Spring Valley rarely has a truly square corner.
Stock cabinets leave gaps and filler strips in houses like these. We scribe every piece to the walls and floors you actually have, so the finished work looks like it came with the house.

What We Offer
Our Services Include
Most of our DC residential work is in kitchens and baths. We also build a steady stream of library walls, media built-ins, and breakfast banquettes for rowhouse dining rooms that don’t fit off-the-shelf furniture.
Why Custom Millwork
Benefits
Custom millwork fits both the house and the way you use it. Each piece is made to order, with finishes chosen to stand up to kids, dogs, and dinner parties. They also have to handle DC’s swing from muggy summers to dry, radiator-heated winters.

Perfect Fit
We build to the exact dimensions of your room, including the out-of-square corners and sloping floors that come with older DC houses. Prefab cabinets can't account for those without visible gaps.
Superior Materials
We choose hardwoods and finishes that stay stable through humid summers and dry winters. Doors stay aligned and joints stay tight long after the install.
Increased Value
Cabinetry built for the house reads as part of the architecture. In a resale market as competitive as DC's, buyers notice the difference between that and a big-box kitchen.
Our Approach
White Glove Service
Our Frederick shop is roughly an hour from most of the District. DC homeowners work with the same people from the first measurement to the final hinge adjustment. We come to your home for walkthroughs, bring material samples you can see in your own light, and keep you updated directly.
- Dedicated project manager for every DC home project
- Direct communication from design through installation
- Quality control inspections at every stage
- Installation by our own craftsmen, never subcontracted

The Sixth Avenue Difference
Why Choose Us
A home project runs on a different clock than a commercial job. You’re usually living in the house while we work, sometimes without a kitchen. That makes the schedule and the communication as important as the joinery.
Craftsmanship That Holds Up
A family kitchen’s drawers get opened thousands of times a year, and banquette seats take daily wear from kids and guests. Our craftsmen use traditional joinery and premium hardwoods. They finish every piece for the use it will actually get in a busy household.
Pricing You Can Plan Around
A DC renovation is expensive enough without surprises. We give you transparent, fixed pricing up front, and the number doesn’t creep once work starts. If you change the scope, we tell you the cost before we build it.
Schedules That Respect Yours
Every week without a working kitchen means another week of takeout. We set a realistic schedule at the start, flag problems early, and plan the install to keep your kitchen out of commission for as short a time as possible. Because we’re an hour away, we can usually get someone to your house the same day if a detail needs a second look.
Quality You Can Inspect
Every piece passes in-shop inspection before it leaves Frederick, and we can send photos so you see your cabinets before they arrive. After the install, we stand behind the work with the same accountability we’ve built across years of projects in the DMV.

Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions DC homeowners ask us most. If yours isn’t here, we’d be glad to hear from you.
We work in homes across the District, including Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Kalorama, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, Shaw, Petworth, Columbia Heights, Brookland, Chevy Chase DC, Spring Valley, AU Park, the Palisades, and the condo towers around Navy Yard. Our Frederick shop is about an hour away, so we treat DC as part of our home market. We also build for homeowners across Maryland and Virginia.
Yes. That’s one of the main reasons DC homeowners come to us. We take field measurements in your home and scribe cabinets, panels, and trim to the actual walls, so the result looks like it was always there.
Yes. Many DC buildings require a certificate of insurance, a reserved freight elevator, and installs during set hours. We coordinate those requirements with your building management before install day.
Most projects take six to sixteen weeks from design to installation, depending on scope, materials, and finish. A single vanity or bookcase wall moves faster than a full kitchen. Once we understand your plans, we give you a clear schedule for each stage.
Yes. We manage design consultation, shop drawings, fabrication, and installation. Our own crew delivers and installs every DC project, so you have one point of contact and one accountable team from start to finish.
We work with walnut, white oak, maple, cherry, and mahogany, along with high-grade veneers and engineered substrates where the application calls for them. We choose materials based on your design, how the room gets used, and how the wood will behave through DC’s humidity swings.
